UO freshman profile: Shirley Chan

High school and home town: Lakes High School in Lakewood, Wash.

My academic interests include: Journalism.

What I like to do for fun: Live-tweet my somewhat interesting life, attend concerts, explore new places, and eat good food.

People might be surprised to know: I constantly end up in embarrassing situations. For example, when I led the turning of the tassel at my graduation, I accidentally yanked off my tassel. Then, I knocked off my graduation cap on stage in the process of trying to pick up my tassel. Following that, I tossed my cap up in the air along with my classmates only for mine to land and get stuck in a decorative plant on stage.

I chose Oregon because: it felt like a home away from home from the moment I stepped on the campus.

My favorite band is:  like a variety of bands like Vampire Weekend, The Shins, The xx, City & Colour, M83, Childish Gambino, Aer, The Weeknd.

iPhone or Android: #TeamiPhone

Scholarships I've received include: Summit Scholarship and Diversity Excellence Scholarship.

When I think of Oregon, I think of: The next chapter in my life with adventures, change, vast opportunities and new friends. Oh, and football games! #GoDucks!

The thing about college I'm most looking forward to is: Learning more about who I am, new perspectives and ideas, and gaining more knowledge about my community and the world I live in.

The one personal item I must bring to college is: My iPod - my daily dose of music.
