Friends of Allen Hall 3.0 celebrate grand opening

Students, staff, faculty and friends converged on Allen Hall Friday afternoon to celebrate the building's grand opening.

The 91-year-old hall, home to the School of Journalism and Communications, re-opened in January after a $15 million renovation. The project transformed the building, adding 18,000 square feet and uniting 1922 and 1954 wings into one cohesive space. The sustainable design added 40 percent more space but the building's energy use is net neutral and 26 percent more efficent than required by Oregon's energy code.

The building features numerous spaces designed to foster collaboration, a skylit atrium, a digital commons with computers and projection screens, walls and glass surfaces that can be written on, and the Dixon Signature Classroom, a 75-person classroom equipped with distance-learning technology.

Private donations, including a $5 million anonymous gift and more than 80 donations ranging from $10 to $400,000, covered half the cost of the project. State general obligation bonds authorized by the 2009 Legislature covered the rest.
